As the semester wraps up, we’re excited to head out into the field! Kya Hoerr is headed to Penn State for an REU on agroecology. Kalaina is headed to an REU at Harvard Forest with Sydne and John.

Dr. Sydne Record and postdoc John Grady are out in Santa Barbara, CA this week at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis. Dr. Record and collaborators from Michigan State Universtiy are leading a working group of 15 scientists from around the USA and internationally to develop recommendations for NASA’s next set of geodiversity data products for biodiversity scientists.

In a new paper by Dr. Sydne Record and colleagues published this week in PLoS One, settlement era forests are compared to contemporary forests to identify how Euro-American land-use and legacies have transformed North America nforests. With new funding from NASA Dr. Sydne Record is organizing a working group at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis in Santa Barbara, California. The goal of this working group is to identify the spatial and temporal scales of NASA data products that are most relevant to biodiversity scientists. Insights from this working group will inform NASA’s decisions on what Earth science data products to create for widespread dissemination to the public.

Tess McCabe successfully defended her thesis on foundation species and ants at Harvard Forest! She will march in Commencement on Saturday. Have fun at Boston University in the Dietze lab, Tess, the Record lab will miss you!

Dr. Sydne Record published a new article on modeling species distributions in the American Statistical Society’s journal CHANCE. Check it out at: chance.amstat.org.

This spring, the Record lab welcomes two new members, Paola Salas and Kalaina Thorne. Both Paola and Kalaina are members of the Bryn Mawr STEM Posse from Boston.
